This is a favorite book of mine, everything you want or need to know about the history and culture of the tomato. Fruit or vegetable? The once know "poisonous apple," technically classified as a fruit has come a long way to the accepted vegetable of the modern world!

Peperonata (Pepper and Tomato Stew)
3 ripe tomatoes
6 red and yellow bell peppers
1/4 cup extra virgin OO
1 onion, sliced
2 garlic cloves, chopped
salt
1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
a few basil leaves
Plunge tomatoes and peppers into boiling water for a few seconds;, drain and peel. Chop tomatoes; seed and slice peppers.
Heat oil in skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and onion and sauté until translucent. Add pepper slices and salt to taste, cook for a few minutes. Add tomatoes and oregano. Cover, reduce heat and cook slowly for 30 minutes, stirring from time to time. Add basil and cook for a few minutes more to blend flavors. Transfer to bowl and serve. Delicious!

As summer days wind down, so will the bounty of fresh tomatoes. We love them here and I think of them as a staple, preparing favorite salads and recipes.

It's tomato season here, too! Last night was Caprese Salad with halved cherry tomatoes - so yummy. And wouldn't you know it, I have Monet's Table out of the library just now - stuffed tomatoes will be on the menu tonight! Thanks for all the tomato love.

Mo my gosh, I love your post about tomatoes. We grow them in a container and I eat a tomato sandwich every day for lunch. Homegrown tomatoes taste wonderful. I would love to know how to make the tomato and pepper dish. We grow peppers too.

Fun post. I'm always sad when tomato season ends. There is just nothing better than a fresh, home grown tomato. We used to pickle our green tomatoes -- when we were tired of fried greens.....!!!!!!!!

Emily, this is a beautiful post full of gorgeous shots. I'm one of the weird ones who doesn't eat tomatoes, so I can't swoon over these like most. I know it's strange, but I don't eat tomatoes. '-) The chef, on the other hand, would love everyone of these dishes. '-)

Rick's are still green so I am agog at all your luscious red tomatoeness! Everything looks so delicious and the recipe sounds great. I'm a big fan of basil and tomato sandwiches. Maybe I should add mozzarella and make it a caprese salad!
ReplyDeleteI love having homegrown tomatoes in the kitchen to make a tomato sandwich for lunch. I also love all the other recipes you mention and I make them all. I have some green tomatoes so I have to try the fried green tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteMy tomatoes are slow to ripen here where the Pacific Ocean blows cool and misty winds even on the hottest days. I've never tried fried green tomatoes, but I make a green tomato curry that freezes well. Your photos are perfectly beautiful!
