Chili on the menu for a cold winter's day!
After all the festive holiday decorations are put away everything looks a little bare so I love using my Juliska Winter Frolic for its beautiful patterns and the red and while color. I think it is perfect to use Christmas through Valentine's Day. I enjoy setting the buffet in the dinning room for coffee, hot chocolate and dessert but today I am serving up bowls of piping hot chili. With just the two of us, I am using trays to enjoy eating in the family room. I have been using the platter as a centerpiece on the table adding a glittering white grapevine wreath. Sitting on the platter is a Jay Strongwater bird (a birthday gift from my sister), a beautiful dark red with lots of sparkle, y'all know how I love sparkle and glitter! The dessert plates have four different scenes, you can see them here in a post I did last year for Valentine's Day.
Chili will warm you to your toes!

Such a pretty place setting.
Chili recipe ingredients
2 Tablespoons olive oil
1 Large onion, diced
1 Medium bell pepper, diced
2 Small red and yellow peppers, diced
2 Tablespoons chili powder, or to taste
1 Tablespoon ground cumin
2 Pounds ground or cubed sirloin
1 (28 ounce) carton beef broth
1 (28 ounce) can finely chopped or crushed tomatoes
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
2 (15 ounce) cans black beans
2 Tablespoons chopped parsley, fresh or dried
Water as needed for desired thickness
And my surprise ingredients for extra flavor?
1 Large or 2 medium diced green tomatoes
1 Cup salsa verde
Toppings
Sour cream
Grated cheese
Finely chopped scallions
This is the recipe I use most often when I make chili. It makes a lot with leftovers for lunch for a day or two and it only gets better in the frig! This recipe is mild, not hot, I don't like hot but if you do just add whatever you like. I love that it is easy and I try to keep it healthy by using low or no salt products. Salt and pepper to taste.
Brown meat in oil, add chili and cumin. Stir to coat.
Add diced peppers, onion and green tomato(s).
Add beef broth and cook on low until vegetables are soft. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, salsa verde, black beans and parsley. Stir and mix well. Simmer for twenty minutes and serve with toppings as desired. I sometimes serve this over rice or with a grilled cheese sandwich. Delicious!
I love chili, perfect for a quick meal on a cold day. Do you make chili often? I hope you will leave a comment so I will know you stopped by.
Burrr, it's cold outside!

O, and thanks so much for the birthday wishes. :)
Good morning! What a cozy meal to anticipate on my chilly (no pun intended) Monday morning. Love the dishes. Oh how I wish for more room for more dishes. Perhaps a place setting will do? Nahhhh.
ReplyDeleteHi Emily! What a pretty table setting--I love the red and white and the little red bird! Hope you are staying warm--we're having a bit of an unusual warm spell up here.
ReplyDeleteThe chili looks yummy!!! I have always loved those dishes, wish they came in my price range!!!
ReplyDeleteI was so lucky to find this pattern on sale after Christmas, fifty percent off with an extra ten for being an early bird! Check out the sales, I never pay retail!
DeleteThe china is absolutely perfect for winter! It's cold tonight - around 32°, which is cold for the seaside in Brittany and I'm in the mood for soup. Maybe I'll make chili for the chilly weather tomorrow ;)
ReplyDeleteLove these dishes with the winter scenes....can't wait to make some chili this week. It does warm me up!
ReplyDeleteEmily, so nice to have you visit, love your header! The winter dishes have a charming nostalgic pattern on them and the chili looks scrumptious. If I hadn't just made some, I'd be pulling out my big pot for another batch.
ReplyDeleteThank you linking to Mosaic Monday.
hi Emily! Your Juliska is winter perfect! I like to decorate with winter things up until Valentine's Day too~ Yes, chili is the perfect meal for these chilly days, your bright ingredient photos were little works of art! Love you new red bird, just beautiful! Stay cozy~

ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!
I have these dishes too... My platter is out on display as well. Don't have the bowls yet, those are on the list! Your table setting looks very nice!
ReplyDeleteDearest Emily,
ReplyDeleteIt is not that cold here but in the evenings such a chili is the perfect thing and a nice comfort food too!
Thank you for sharing this great recipe, did copy it and will probably make it in a vegetarian version, not with red meat...
Sending you blessings,
Mariette
LOVE that china...just the right amount of tradition and whimsy! Thanks for sharing your chili recipe with us (especially your secret ingredients)!
ReplyDeleteLooks so yummy, Emily, and what a pretty presentation in those lovely dishes....Christine

I ♥ your tray, that Juliska pattern is so pretty, there is something about white with red that tugs at me, every time. Your little cardinal is the perfect piece to complement your tray. I would use this pattern all winter. I made chili as soon as I arose this morning, it tastes so good when it has been simmering all day.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week, Emily.
That pattern looked so familiar, then I remebered a good friend has it I believe! The red against the white really pops.
ReplyDeleteChili is one of my favorite 'make ahead' dishes, and this one sounds Delish!
Your secret ingredient looks great! I'm going to get some of that next time I get to a TJs! The table is gorgeous and I loved your BG music! And I smiled to see the Dei Fratelli tomatoes -- the company is run by a shoestring relative of Rick's (a cousin of a cousin or something like that!) and so we never use anything else! Love chili and will have to try your variation!
ReplyDeleteEmily, I could use a bowl of that chili here this evening. It is so wet and cold! You know I adore your Juliska dishes. I almost bought myself the winter frolic dessert plates at Christmas time. Love Juliska's designs. You may recall I have the dessert plates in the autumn color and scene. Last week while at Neiman Marcus Last Call I picked up a set of four of the dinner plates in the blue. Just couldn't walk away from them even though it was just four. Do you know the story about these designs? You can read it on the web page. The artist is in the UK and does custom orders. Susan and I have been dreaming of what we would order. Ha!
ReplyDeleteCold and miserable here with lots of rain today. Hope you are warm and cozy!
LOVE those pretty dishes Emily and I love chili...think I'll make a pot this weekend!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! Love chili in the winter and yours looks so good!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing at AMAZE ME MONDAY.
Blessings,
Cindy
Your dishes are gorgeous and perfect for both Winter and Valentines, like you said. I also love your little red bird. Your chili sounds yummy. I have a recipe we like, but I want to give this one a try. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,

I am so hungry for a bowl of good chili....:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful china pattern! I've never seen this pattern, but I love it, and your tray looks so pretty. I'm going to be on the lookout for some. Your chili sounds sooo good. Thank you for sharing the recipe. There is nothing like a bowl of good chili to warm you in the wintertime. laurie
ReplyDeleteOh Emily, this post warms my heart instantly. I am in love with your china.
ReplyDeleteYour chili recipe is almost identical to mine, with the exception of the beans and salsa verde. I use Cannellini and Kidney, but now I MUST try make it with black beans.
Yum!
Love this pattern, a favorite.
ReplyDeleteAnn
Made your black bean and salsa verde chili yesterday, Emily. Divine! My new favorite chili recipe. :)
