PETALS FROM THE PAST

I have vivid memories of my grandmother’s roses. I remember beautiful and fragrant roses all around her yard, so it’s no surprise I would want to plant roses in my flower beds.
I look forward to our roses blooming in the spring but this year we also had a lot of storms. Wind and heavy rains shorten the blooming season but I did make a few photos to share.

Raindrops on Roses after a stormy afternoon

I love old fashioned roses so I planted two vintage varieties. The first to bloom in early spring is the Rêve d’Or,  along with vintage garden roses transplanted from cuttings from my mother-in-law’s gardens. Shades of pale yellow, peach and pink. The second variety, another climbing rose is the  Peggy Martin. It blooms late spring and will repeat bloom after the summer heat beginning in the fall. It has small flowers, forming cascading clusters of flowers.

Do you have memories of flowers from your childhood? Do tell, I would love to hear.

  3. Oh, be still my heart. The roses you shared are stunning. I love dewdrops on the petals. My memories are from our farm in Michigan so many years ago when I was a child. The roses were the climbing variety and they would be all over the fences. Pink and red with white ones too. You sure brought back those memories.
    thank you so much.
    Happy Pink Saturday

  4. Goodness, I have serious rose envy after seeing this post! I do have roses, but nothing like this.
Emily, I have tried several times to put your blog on my sidebar, but can't...I keep getting a red x on the configure blog list page...it shows up at the very bottom on my sidebar, but doesn't show me what you have posted or move from the last space. Do you have any idea why this is happening when no others do?
    Have a great week...

  5. Oh, my, Emily. Your roses make my heart sing. Our knockout roses are loyal bloomers for us, but they don't put on a show like these climbers. My mom grew antique roses, so I can relate to your memories. Love the little motto dish. '-)

  6. Gorgeous roses! I almost thought I could smell them through the screen but then I realized it was the strawberry jam on my bread. Ha!! :)

  7. Love your Quimper tile: I life without memories is like a spring without roses....I think that's what it says...

Anyway, your rose photos are so pretty. They should be featured in a magazine!

LOVELY post....and I think we are in for a few storms tomorrow! I hope they aren't severe.

Have a great weekend, Sweet Emily!

  9. I AM IN HEAVEN!!!!! Oh Emily, my dream is to have a climbing rose bush! The only hardy variety to my region (zone 3-4 tops) is the beautiful William Baffin that resembles your PEGGY....but they reach a very bush height that my husband dreads to deal with!!! Oh that little white bistro set with the chandelier....I WANT!!!

Thank you for coming to visit our world today. We love making our OWN magic, and though it's very difficult to do all these things yourself, it sure is worth it when you can see the photos to compare, reminisce, and even write about it.

Have a totally GORGEOUS and Frenchy weekend! Anita

  13. You definitely have the green thumb! I'm in awe of your roses. I have one climber which refuses to climb.
It's more of a flopper, even though I tried tying it to the pergola. :) Thank you for sharing your gorgeous roses. LOVE them!

  15. Heavenly. Painting the roses yellow, pink, and peach is definitely my choice over red. Shhh...don't tell the queen of hearts. :)
You make the rain sound so perfect, Emily. It's raining here too. No pool. :( But lots of inspiration.
The flowers I remember most from my childhood are African Violets. My mother always kept three pots on her window sill and they were always PERFECT. Thank you for encouraging me to remember.
Always wonderful stopping by. For some reason, your posts are not jumping up on my blogroll when you update, so I have to look into that. Don't want to miss a thing at The French Hutch.
    Have a beautiful day, love.

  16. I have a vivid flower memory. When I was a young child, I fell out of an open window at my home and landed in a rose bush! My mother had my father chop down all the rose bushes and never grew another one. Luckily I did not develop a fear of the rose. Yours are gorgeous! I especially love the climbing ones.

  17. How beautiful all the roses are.
I love old-time, garden roses and care nothing for the ones from the floral shops....wonder why that is??
My mama raised Iris, white daisies and always had lilac bushes. :)

  23. Your roses are stunning. I do have a memory of a year my dad bought 220 roses and they arrived in a big box and we planted for days on end. Some made it and others didn't but those that did were glorious.
